Released in 2001 (review written February 19, 2024) Rating: 9/10 This is one of the most nostalgic comedies for me, right there with Rat Race. I was too young to watch it on release (rated R) and to be honest, when I did watch it around 2005 or 2006, I was still too young. I remember it pretty clearly. My best friend back then was Alex. He would come to my house for sleepovers pretty often, maybe once a month or so. We would stay up as late as possible drinking caffeine-free Diet Dr. Pepper, eating Doritos and Chex Mix and pizza and burgers, playing video games like Timesplitters 2 and Burnout, watching Adult Swim and Girls Gone Wild commercials on TV, and so on. At some point he was lucky to get an iPod Video! He would also bring his dad's laptop over with DVDs from Blockbuster. My parents didn't know or they would've freaked out. His mom and dad didn't care about content or ratings, like pretty much everyone else at school. We watched Dorm Daze (ugh, it sucked) and Euro Trip (don't remember it at all) and maybe Van Wilder, I'm not sure. We'd also watch South Park episodes on his iPod Video and that's when I was introduced to World of Warcraft. We were both psyched to play the game but I had an ancient G3 iMac that couldn't possibly run it.
It was so hard not to make noise with this movie, late at night when my parents were asleep. The writing is incredible. They simply don't make films like this anymore. I give it a 9 because some of it is low effort; it's not on the same playing field as Top Secret, for example, but it ranks high because of how nostalgic it is for me. It is jam-packed with references to teen movies, obviously. My favorite things are the subtle background elements I never noticed as a kid, like "Anthony Michael Dining Hall" or Malik the token black guy's hair changing every time he's seen.
Damn! Sheeeeit! Oh, that is wack! The scene with the undercover reporter old lady who is inexplicably a virgin with the lesbian kiss was gross. I pretended to be into it when I was a kid to keep up appearances but wow that was disgusting. Reggie Ray and his pig and concussions, Austin being a closet homo, Areola and her casual nude appearances, there's just so much to like, and it's overall very cozy. It really feels like the culmination of teen movies, the peak of the genre. Watch the source material, then watch this, and there's nothing left. This was part of the dawn of 2000s parodies such as Scary Movie, and I have to say it holds up way better. It unfortunately tainted my perception of high school and what being a teenager was like. There are some "cliques" and conflicts but overall it was nothing like this movie or pretty much any other. Losing your virginity was not nearly as important as this or American Pie made it to be. Fact is, most kids don't lose their virginity in high school, especially nowadays. Zoomers are basically asexual at this point, statistically, and that's likely due to government propaganda to pit genders against each other, as well as microplastics in the water, soil, and air. A stupid tangent, forget I said anything. |
